Citizen juries

Citizen juries, pioneered by the Jefferson Center in the US, bring a random selection of citizens together to assess the pros and cons of contested policy proposals, and sometimes generate new ideas. Juries are usually established on a similar basis to judicial juries, but without formal constitutional authority. These have been used across government in the UK, mainly in local government but also including the Department for Trade and Industry and the Food Standards Agency.
